Pathophysiology: Cancer

Coders frequently encounter medical documentation that requires knowledge of oncology for accurate ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and/or CPT/HCPCS code assignment.

Cancer refers to a group of diseases in which cells ignore normal signals that control cell division, growth, and lifespan. These cells start dividing uncontrollably and form tumors in organs and tissues, or they crowd out normal cells in the blood or bone marrow (American Association for Cancer Research [AACR], 2023). Cancer can occur at any age, but the risk increases with age. Recognizing how these details are captured in patient records will help you accurately assign codes.

This course provides medical coding professionals with a basic understanding of oncology (the study and treatment of cancer), including the characteristics and terminology of cancer, tumor spread, and the clinical manifestations of cancer. It also covers common cancer treatments and the side effects that many patients experience.

The goal of this course is to provide certified professional coders and tumor registrars with a basic understanding of oncology.
